The Person County Recycling Center (PCRC) opened in June of 2009. PCRC is a MRF (Materials Recovery Facility) that accepts comingled recyclables from Person County and surrounding counties.
What is a MRF?
A MRF, which stands for Materials Recovery Facility, is an enclosed building that contains equipment that can mechanically sort mixed recyclable material and bale it up for sale to the recycling market. The facility is made up of a series of conveyor belts and a mix of manual and automatic procedures to separate the materials and remove any unnecessary items.
How do I go about recycling in my home or business?
Many people choose not to recycle because they envision a process where they must have separate containers for glass, cans, plastics, etc. and conclude they just don’t have the space. But it does not have to be that difficult.
Simply set aside a container in your home and comingle your recyclables, i.e., put everything in the same container. Then, swing by the MRF during our convenient hours of operation when there is an attendant on duty or after hours where there are containers for self service.
All materials will be sorted at the MRF. However, we do ask that plastic and glass containers, as well as bottles and other containers, be completely empty. Any food and trash should be placed in your regular garbage receptacle.
Businesses and other commercial users should unload from the same area but near the rollup doors where our friendly employees will be ready to assist you.
PCRC is the first Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) run by people with disabilities.

When people have more severe disabilities that make it hard to communicate, move around or understand things, they may need the Community Alternatives Program (CAP). This is a Medicaid program designed to help individuals function as independently as possible with their disability. Staff works one-on-one or in small groups to provide attention and assistance as each participant works on goals. The person receiving the service has a Person Centered Plan that is “Person Centered” and developed with input from the individual, case manager, family, guardian, and staff at Person Industries that help determine what goals the individual will work towards while attending Person Industries.
In the CAP program individuals work on prevocational skills such as attention span, motor skills, attendance, and task completion. Staff will help the person learn how to express feelings effectively, how to be safe in the community, how to exercise, how to work with a computer, etc. CAP services take place at PI and in the community. Each person in the program will have a case manager who will help coordinate services that may not be offered at Person Industries.
